Untold Fables by Daniel Holfeld

PhotoIreland is the countries first International Festival for Photography. There’s a load of cool shows on; I recommend getting down to see The Gift by Giorgia Fiorio in the Gallery of Photography, Inspiration curated by Perry Ogden at the Sebastian Guinness Gallery and  The Thing That Bruises You in The Back Loft, La Catedral. Super photo guy Daniel Holfeld has some pieces in The Thing That Bruises You, you can check out more of his stuff on his site (which I designed… shameless plug).

Andreas Gursky: Oceans

andreasgursky

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The planet is covered in about 75% sea water —

Arctic Ocean – Average depth of 5000 feet, but is 17,880 feet deep at it’s deepest. Covers an area of 5,440,000 square miles.
Indian Ocean – Average depth of 13,000 feet, but is 25, 344 feet deep at it’s deepest. Covers an area of 28,400,000 square miles.
Atlantic Ocean – Average depth 14,000 feet, but is 28,374 feet at it’s deepest. Covers an area of 31,831,000 square miles.
Pacific Ocean – Average depth of 14,000 feet, but is 36,198 feet at it’s deepest. The largest ocean of the four, it covers an area of nearly 64,000,000 square miles.

Andreas Gursky has used “high-definition satellite photographs which he augmented from various picture sources on the Internet” to create these huge expanses of water. Apparently the seas themselves, which make up most of the images, had to be generated artificially.
