Ghost Turnip

The Ghost Turnip is a plaster-cast of a carved turnip that was made in 1943, who stated that it was always made locally around 1900.

The tradition of carving turnips dates back to Samhain, according to the Smithsonian. On October 31st, which signalled the end of Summer, it was believed that ghosts were free to roam the earth. One ghost was particularly freaky.

A drunk Irish lad called Stingy Jack who tricked the devil three times was the ghost that you didn’t want to meet. He trapped the devil up a tree (by carving a cross into it when he went up to grab an apple) and he would only let auld Lucifer down, if he promised not to drag him to hell when he died. When he popped his clogs, God didn’t want him (he was a drunk that was hanging out with the Devil, after all) and Satan couldn’t have him, so he sent him back to earth with a hot coal embedded into a Turnip. This Jack of the Lantern could be kept at back with a carved turnip (or potato) to keep yourself safe.

So if you want to stay safe this Samhain or Hallow’een, check out this Ghost Turnip pin for yourself.

And yeah, Jack of the Lanter became the Jack O’Lantern in the US - and they used pumpkins coz they were softer and more widely available.
